OGDEN's BASIC ENGLISH

1000 BASIC ENGLISH WORDS THAT ALL LEARNERS WILL KNOW.

A reader asked for the 1000 Basic English words. There is no 1000 word list (until now).

a . Basic English has a core of 850 words plus, selection of one of three (or more) 100 word lists of ones special interest, each of which has several 50 word lists for employment within that special interest. Thus a learner is expected to know 1000 words upon completion of a course of Basic English study. Thus a learner with broad interests would get to know over 1200 words (not 1300 because there is some overlap in lists)
b . Basic English includes several lists of works on the assumption of international understanding and includes time and numbers. Words of international standards such as geography, music, chemistry, and others may be used in Basic English. The proper names of persons, places, titles, names of particular things (Plato, Eiffel Tower, Governor, Basic English Institue) are not limited on any language and are used in the English form.
c . The reader may have meant to ask for a list of the most common 1000 words (or txt) in the English language. If so, these web links are from projects within the Institute.
d . There are paths to fuller English at the 2000 word level which Odgen considers the threashold to full English.
e . The institute recommends that the most fequent words in English be allowed. These words will be repeatedly seen by the learner and used without special leanning. These are redundant to Basic English, but will add to common understanding and speech by others. They consist of the 1000 most frequent words in full English that are not already in Basic English and some words form the VOA wordlist. This addition is sometimes called Simple English (+780 words),
f . The Institue also suggusts that loan-words that are common between the country of the learner be allowed to be included in the vocabulary. For example, there are many words common the English and Spanish as used over large area of the earth. Notice that additions to the 1000 words may not be understood by learners in other parts of the earth.
g. The following are the 1000 core and most significant words that all Basic English learners will know. All learners will know at least 150 additional words of their special interest and employment.
